Sixteen cowrie shells are cast on a round mat. How many fall open determines one of seventeen Odus — sacred configurations, each carrying particular Orixás, elements and spiritual forces. Unlike tarot, which was popularised in European salons, búzios comes from a living religious tradition: the shells diagnose, prescribe and protect rather than only predict.
